WHAT IS A TILLANDSIA?
Tillandsia, the largest genus of the bromeliad family, is indigenous to South and Central America and southern parts of the United States. Varieties can be found growing on trees, rocks, cliffs, and some types of cacti. Thin-leaf varieties grow in areas with more rain, and thick-leaf varieties in areas more subject to drought. Although some varieties are both terrestrial and epiphytic, soil is not a necessity to grow these unique plants. Tillandsias have specially developed cells that allow water and nutrients to be taken in through their leaves. Their roots, and on some varieties, their leaves, are used as wire-like anchors to attach themselves to a host. However, Tillandsias are not parasitic; they derive no nutrients from their host. Tillandsias have a growth cycle starting with one plant growing to maturity and then blooming. Most Tillandsias, with a few exceptions, bloom only once in their lifetime. After blooming, new plants form around the base or along the stem of the “mother” plant. They will then eventually mature and complete their blooming cycle in one to several years, depending upon the variety and growing conditions. Tillandsias, because they don’t need soil to grow and prosper, can be placed in or on almost ANYTHING (rocks, shells, pottery, driftwood, around water fountains, reptile tanks, etc.)! They are NOT toxic to animals, and are easily shipped without harm.

PLANT CARE
The appearance of your plant is the greatest indication of its particular needs. Generally, plants with soft, green to green-gray leaves require high humidity, frequent watering and prefer shaded areas. Plants with stiff, gray to gray-white leaves require more light and less watering. All Tillandsias like good air circulation and should be allowed to dry out between waterings. Experiment by moving your plant periodically and noting which location it grows best. Lighting types: Tillandsias will tolerate bright, indirect sunlight, fluorescent office lighting, or a frost-protected shaded patio. Generally, direct sun is not recommended, however, some varieties can handle some early morning sun - this will allow them to “blush” (change colors) before they bloom! If fluorescent lighting is used, it should be located no more than twelve (12) inches from the plant(s). When growing indoors, better growth and blooms will occur if your plant is placed near a window.
Watering frequency: When possible, remove plants from their containers and spray HEAVILY, or rinse them under a faucet or hose until they are dripping wet. Remember, most grow naturally where it rains! Always allow the base of the plant to dry before placing it back in its container. Frequency of watering (how many times per week) will depend on: (1.) Temperature variation (summer vs. winter) (2.) Whether it is indoors or outdoors, and (3.) Variety (soft, green to green-gray or stiff, gray to gray-white leaves). Generally, with the spray or rinse method, you should water indoor Tillandsias 2-3 times a week, and outdoor Tillandsias 3-4 times a week. In warmer and drier conditions, an overnight soaking (immersing in a bucket of water) will rehydrate them more efficiently than spraying or rinsing. Again, appearance is the best indication of your plant’s need. Learn to recognize the symptoms. The most frequent reasons indoor-grown Tillandsias die is from lack of water and light. Simply misting your plants occasionally is not sufficient. Your plants need a good dripping-wet watering on a frequent basis. Adequate lighting is equally important.
Fertilizer: Use Bromeliad fertilizer (17-8-22) once a month (March to October). It is GREAT for blooming and reproduction! Other water-soluble fertilizers can be used at 1/4 strength (Rapid Grow, Miracle-Grow, etc.) if Bromeliad fertilizer is not available.
DO’s AND DON’T’s
Do: Shake off excess water after watering (especially in the large fleshy varieties). Again, with unmounted Tillandsias, be sure to let the base dry before putting it back in its container/display. Give tall, thin-leafed varieties (T. Butzii, T. Juncea, etc.) an extra spray on their tips, as they dry out faster. When possible, place plants in containers with natural holes as opposed to gluing them. This will make it much easier to water them, especially when you use the soaking method, and you don’t have to wait for the whole container to dry before putting it back in its place! Trim away any brown, dried or injured (bent) leaves (this will not harm the plant). Since Tillandsias are much heartier if left to form a colony, it is best to leave pups (babies) on the “mother” plant, or wait until it reaches the size of the “mother” plant before removing. But, if you wish, you may cut off bloomed-out flowers when their color dries up.
Don’t: Don’t worry about roots. You can cut them off to make it easier to place them in containers (they will grow back). They are also easier to water that way. Don’t leave water sitting in the crevices of big, fleshy Tillandsias. Shake off the excess water! Don’t put them in containers that hold moisture around the base. Again, let them dry well before returning them to their display or containers. Don’t use the soaking method to water Tillandsias while in bloom (prolonged periods of soaking flowers in bloom will rot them). Don’t let them freeze! Keep their environment temperature above 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
MOUNTING
Since Tillandsias do not require soil to grow and prosper, they can be displayed in many ways not available for traditional plants. They can be mounted, by their roots and base, to almost any surface by using Liquid Nail, a hot glue gun, Goop, or any similar adhesive. Plants can also be attached by using fishing line or any non-copper wire. Care should be taken to mount plants so that they are oriented in a manner that allows excess water to drain from the leaves and the base. This is especially important in bulbous-based varieties like Tillandsia Bulbosa, Caput-Medusae and Seleriana. Other varieties with fleshy leaves that hold and trap water should also be mounted like-wise, or care should be given to ensure that water is not allowed to remain on the plant in excess of 4 hours. Failure to ensure adequate drainage will cause your plant(s) to rot
